A twisting tale of love, loss, and dark family secrets.” — Paula Hawkins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Girl on the Train and Into the WaterA poignant and suspenseful drama that untangles the complicated ties binding three women—two sisters and their mother—in one Chinese immigrant family and explores what happens when the eldest daughter disappears, and a series of family secrets emerge, from the New York Times bestselling author of Girl in Translation It begins with a mystery. Sylvie, the beautiful, brilliant, successful older daughter of the Lee family, flies to the Netherlands for one final visit with her dying grandmother—and then vanishes.Amy, the sheltered baby of the Lee family, is too young to remember a time when her parents were newly immigrated and too poor to keep Sylvie. Seven years older, Sylvie was raised by a distant relative in a faraway, foreign place, and didn’t rejoin her family in America until age nine. Timid and shy, Amy has always looked up to her sister, the fierce and fearless protector who showered her with unconditional love. But what happened to Sylvie? Amy and her parents are distraught and desperate for answers. Sylvie has always looked out for them. Now, it’s Amy’s turn to help. Terrified yet determined, Amy retraces her sister’s movements, flying to the last place Sylvie was seen. But instead of simple answers, she discovers something much more valuable: the truth. Sylvie, the golden girl, kept painful secrets . . . secrets that will reveal more about Amy’s complicated family—and herself—than she ever could have imagined.A deeply moving story of family, secrets, identity, and longing, Searching for Sylvie Lee is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive portrait of an immigrant family. You can’t put it down!” – Jenna Bush Hager, Today Show Book Club PickBook Searching for Sylvie Lee: A Novel Review :
I am not a literary critic. I am just a reader. I read a lot. I was highly anticipating loving this book, after reading the sample and reading reviews. Sadly I did not love it. It was a pretty quick read. I didnt think the characters were developed enough. The story line had potential, but in the end, I felt it went flat. I had figured out the supposedly shocking ending early on. The book was dark and unsatisfying. I am truly and completely wow’ed!From the moment I started Searching for Sylvie Lee, I found myself 100% captivated. This book centers around the Lee family, a Chinese family made up of a husband, wife and 2 daughters (Sylvie and Amy) who immigrated to the Untied States 30(ish) years ago. Their eldest daughter, Sylvie, travels to the Netherlands to be with her grandma in her final days and ultimately goes missing! It was at this point that I found this book unputdownable!Throughout the novel Jean Kwok takes us between New York City and the Netherlands and the novel is told in three perspectives of Ma, Sylvie, and Amy. I felt that worked perfectly with the plot because it keeps the reader on the hook, but still an organic way to take us on their journey. Searching for Sylvie Lee is a 5 star read that seamlessly combines women’s fiction, mystery/suspense, and general fiction to create a compelling storyline that will stay with you! This fantastic novel would make a great book club selection! Must Read! I would like to thank the publisher for providing me this book in exchange for an honest review.
